Detailed Engineering of Ålesund and Sula Kongshaugen Wastewater Treatment Plant

Spot Engineering is proud to be part of one of the largest and most significant environmental projects in Northwestern Norway. In collaboration with our mother company, SPOT AS, we are carrying out the detailed engineering of the process piping systems for new Kongshaugen Wastewater Treatment Plant serving the municipalities of Ålesund and Sula. The facility is designed for a capacity of up to 66,000 population equivalents (PE) and is a key part of the BLÅ – Fjordar for framtida (Blue – Fjords for the Future) initiative. The Kongshaugen project builds on our experience from previous wastewater treatment projects, including Linnes Wastewater Treatment Plant (66,000 PE) and Kongsberg Wastewater Treatment Plant (40,000 PE).

Project Scope

The Kongshaugen Wastewater Treatment Plant is being constructed inside Veibustfjellet mountain and will serve as a shared wastewater treatment facility for the municipalities of Ålesund and Sula. Once completed, the plant will significantly improve wastewater treatment, contribute to cleaner fjords, and ensure compliance with both Norwegian and European environmental regulations. The project represents a major investment in environmental protection, sustainable regional development, and future-proof water and wastewater management.

Our Role

In the spring of 2025, SPOT AS (subcontractor) and Biowater Technology AS (main contractor) entered into a partnership to prepare the overall project cost estimate for this delivery. As a subsidiary of SPOT AS, Spot Engineering is responsible for the detailed engineering of the piping systems to be installed within the underground facility, while SPOT AS is responsible for the fabrication and installation of the piping systems.

At the time of writing, Spot Engineering is producing approximately 750 piping isometric drawings, which form the basis for the manufacturing, prefabrication, and installation of the plant's extensive process piping systems.

This level of detailed engineering requires a high degree of precision, strong interdisciplinary coordination, and close collaboration between all project stakeholders. Each isometric drawing represents a critical component of a complex facility, where quality, accuracy, and constructability are essential for successful project execution.
